February 3-5, 2012, the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater (UJFT) is delighted to partner with Ohef Sholom Temple, Beth Chaverim, B’nai Israel Congregation, Temple Israel, Kempsville Conservative Synagogue and Temple Sinai to plan a Community-Federation Shabbaton (Congregation Beth El, Temple Emanuel and Gomley Chesed Synagogue will participate in a Federation Shabbaton in the fall).

You may know the UJFT works to strengthen and nurture our Jewish community here in Tidewater, in Israel and around the world. Few of us realize exactly how. This Shabbaton will fill in some details. For instance, did you know that funds from Tidewater help support Reform and Conservative youth groups in Israel? Or that our Annual Campaign dollars are put to work helping newly-arrived Ethiopian children succeed in their secular and religious studies? Or that money we raise right here in Virginia helps Orthodox Israeli Defense Forces soldiers continue their Talmudic studies while serving?

Shoel Silver from the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), will be the Tidewater Jewish community’s scholar-in-residence for the Shabbaton weekend. He will address congregants at each of the participating synagogues. Silver’s visit will engage the Tidewater Jewish community in conversations that cross the boundaries of religious streams and congregations.

We hope to include as many community members as possible in the dialogue started during this Shabbaton. Please come join the conversation and learn more about where, how and why our community sends tzedakah.
